The Farm Bill of 2014 jump started the industrial hemp industry, but the open commerce of hemp distillates would still be prohibited because of the inherent THC content resulting from the extraction process. Our patented technology created high quality THC-free* distillates via chromatography for the first time (U.S. Patent No. 10,239,808). This seminal method preserves the wide array of cannabinoids found in the hemp plant whereas some competitors discard many of the valuable cannabinoids along with THC in their processes. The unrivaled profiles achieved by our THC-removal technology enables TreeHouse Biosciences™ and our licensees to stand out in a field of otherwise sub-par ingredients.

Inspired by nature’s gentle transformation of THC to CBN, TreeHouse Biosciences™ utilizes a proprietary USDA organic certified method of THC remediation, selectively converting THC into CBN using only oxygen and heat. Performed in a highly controlled environment, this method retains not only CBD but the broad spectrum of other cannabinoids present in hemp extracts and distillates. Though we are strong proponents of THC remediation via chromatography, we realize it is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and this USDA organic certified method provides a nature-inspired alternative for customers who want to minimize chemical processing. Cannabis sativa produces over 100 unique cannabinoids. The isolation of these cannabinoids (including CBN, CBG, and CBC) represents a substantial area of interest in cannabinoid research and commercialization. However, the purification of these unique plant-derived cannabinoids, particularly at commercial scale, is still in its infancy. The majority of the cannabinoids remain unstudied and unsuccessfully purified at scale. This significant gap underpins our initiative to isolate and study these cannabinoids with a focus on industrial production feasibility.

Only about five of the 100 cannabinoids produced by Cannabis sativa are generated in appreciable amounts from current genetic strains. Additionally, current understanding of the natural cannabinoid biosynthetic pathways indicates many of the 100+ known cannabinoids are not discreetly genetically encoded, but rather a result of different oxidation mechanisms occurring both in cellular and atmospheric environments. This renders isolation of most cannabinoids from the plant unfeasible on an industrial scale. Given the potential of the 100+ known cannabinoids, we have developed a proprietary bio-inspired synthetic approach to access these unique molecules. Our patent portfolio enables rapid access to all cannabinoids with a laser focus on R&D scale manufacture and forward looking cost-effective industrial production.

While tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) have garnered much attention for their medicinal potential, the 100+ other cannabinoids produced by Cannabis sativa remain virtually unstudied. This immense family of molecules presents an untapped repository for both wellness and pharmaceutical product development. Wading into this untapped field, TreeHouse Biosciences™ extensive patent portfolio was designed with a two pronged approach: access to all of the cannabinoids and investigation of their unique medicinal properties. This is an immense undertaking, but the vast medicinal promise of cannabinoids is inspiring rather than daunting. We are conducting medicinal investigations, starting from the ground up with protein and cellular based studies to full mammalian and human trials.

To date, USDA organic certified CBD isolate is not commercially available. CBD isolate manufacturing processes utilize hydrocarbon solvents during the crystallization process. This hinders natural product companies by limiting the amount of CBD isolate they can compliantly integrate into their products or forces them to use inconsistent crude extract and distillate ingredients. Given this gap in current market production capabilities, TreeHouse Bisociences™ is developing a USDA organic certifiable method for producing CBD Isolate. We are currently scaling this new technology to meet commercial demands.

Today’s “natural” cannabinoid extracts show significant inconsistencies not only from strain to strain, but across a variety of factors — from growing time and plant nutrients to post-harvest storage and extraction methodology. The highly variable cannabinoid and terpene profiles of these “natural” extracts make consistent formulation extremely difficult and even impossible in some cases. Additionally, hemp extracts are highly viscous, sticky, and generally cumbersome to handle resulting in difficult and costly overage requirements in bulk production. Rigorously applying proven biotech approaches to cannabinoid formulations, our novel ingredient program aims to develop new form factors for bulk cannabinoid ingredients. Cannabinoids are lipophilic (fat-loving) molecules and therefore fundamentally insoluble in water in their natural state. However, water-based products containing cannabinoids represent an immense opportunity. To create stable cannabinoid water-based products, emulsification or chemical modification of the cannabinoids is required. Today’s emulsions are not satisfactorily shelf stable, are severely limited in cannabinoid dosage capabilities, and pose significant flavor and clarity challenges. Having evaluated many of these technologies, we are developing better ingredients for cannabinoid water-based product manufacturers and brands.
